As AI experimentation becomes increasingly common within firms, the next challenge is deciding what deserves broader organizational investment. Which needs are worth solving? Where could AI improve the way the practice operates, rather than just making existing workflows faster? And what needs to be understood before committing time, budget, and organizational capacity to a solution?

This two-hour working session goes deeper into the approach introduced at the AIA Oregon Design Conference. Designed for practices beginning to make more intentional decisions about AI adoption and integration at the firm level, the workshop will help you examine your operational needs, identify where AI could create meaningful value, and develop a clearer basis for deciding what to explore, prioritize, and invest in.

What we'll work on

Bring a real need, challenge, or area of uncertainty from your practice. Together, we'll work through how to:

• Investigate an operational need to uncover underlying problems and opportunities

• Gather useful perspectives across workflows, roles, and organizational boundaries

• Identify patterns, dependencies, and hidden needs

• Move beyond individual tasks to understand how workflows, information, people, and systems interact at the organizational level

• Distinguish opportunities to improve the system from opportunities to simply speed up an existing task

• Translate needs into criteria for evaluating potential AI interventions

• Surface important considerations such as data readiness, integration, organizational impact, and adoption

• Determine what you need to know before making the next reasonable commitment

Apply the approach to your own practice while learning from shared challenges and perspectives within the group.

You'll leave with greater clarity around the challenge you've explored and a clear path for what to investigate, test, or define next.

More broadly, you'll leave with a framework for identifying and defining operational needs, setting meaningful objectives for AI initiatives, and building the clarity needed to inform AI planning, prioritization, and investment across your practice.

An optional worksheet will be sent in advance to help you identify a useful area to explore. No advance preparation is required.
